Let’s begin!

What Should You Sell?

If you want to start an eCommerce store, you first need to decide what you’re going to sell.

When deciding on a product for your eCommerce store, you should sell something that you would personally buy. For instance, if you do a lot of mountaineering, it might be a good idea to sell something associated with this niche.

Do things this way is beneficial because if you belong to the target audience, you will understand what the target audience wants. As a result, you will then be able to come up with a product idea that the target audience wants to buy.

So, see if you can identify a hobby that you’re really passionate about.

You should then consider if there is a product within that niche, that could be improved upon. So, if we take the mountaineering niche from earlier, this could include a grappling hook that is easier to hold.

Creating a Product Sketch

Once you have an idea for a product, you need to develop a ‘sketch’ of the product.

If you do this, you will have a clear understanding of what you want. It will also be easier for you to communicate your ideas to a manufacturer.

The sketch should detail the dimensions of your product and any special features it might have. If you don’t know how to create this sketch yourself, reach out to a professional product designer.

Making Your Product

Once you know what you want to sell, you then need to go about making your product.

Most of the people that sell items online typically use a manufacturer based in China. If you want to find a China-based manufacturer, you can do so using the website Alibaba.

Ideally, you want to find a product manufacturer that’s already making items similar to what you want to sell. So, if we take the grappling hook example from earlier, you should find manufacturers that are already selling such items.

Note that before you commit to a manufacturer, you should ask them to create a prototype. Only after this prototype is made, will you be able to judge the quality of their work.

Following this, you should identify a variety of promising manufacturers on the Alibaba platform, and then send them a message.

In this message, you should include a product sketch and a note that asks how much it’ll cost to create a prototype. The manufacturer will then get back to you with some figures and a rough estimate in terms of how long it’ll take to make the prototype.

Note that the prototype will often cost a lot more than the final per-unit price of your product. This is because it is expensive for a manufacturer to create a single prototype, and so they will pass this cost onto you.

Setting up Your ECommerce Store

Once your product is ready, you need to think about setting up an eCommerce store so that you can sell your product.

Fortunately, if you use a platform like Shopify, setting up an eCommerce store is quite easy. The platform provides you with a lot of themes, and you can use customize these themes to give your store a unique look.

Shopify provides you with a trial, and so if you just want to see how it works, you can do so without having to spend any money.

Generating Sales

If you want to generate sales for your eCommerce store, you can get a lot of great results with Facebook Ads.

One of the good things about Facebook Ads is that you can target ‘interests.’ So, if you sell mountaineering gear, you can target people that have an interest in mountaineering.

Note that running Facebook Ads can be quite hard, and so you might want to hire an agency that can help you. If you know someone else that owns an eCommerce store, you can ask them who handles their Facebook Ads.

If you can’t find an individual like this, you can just Google ‘Facebook Ads agency for eCommerce.’ In doing so, you should come across an agency that can help you with your ads.

Getting Products to Customers

Another thing you need to think about is how you’re going to get products to customers.

If you want to adopt the traditional route, you can package the items in your home.

So, each time an order comes through, you’ll package it and then post it. However, this approach can take up a lot of time, and it can lead to delivery delays if you have to do this after work.

Following this, you might want to think about using a company that offers eCommerce fulfillment solutions.

Such solutions will manage the shipping side of your eCommerce business. You just need to send pre-packaged items to the fulfillment center, and the center will then ship the items whenever an order comes through.

Do You Know How to Start a Successful ECommerce Business?

If you want to start a successful eCommerce business, you need to get a lot of little things right.

For instance, you need to select a good product, but you also need to do a good job when promoting your products. If you drop the ball on one thing, your store might not succeed.

To begin with, managing all these moving parts can be difficult, and you might feel as though you’re not up for the job. Yet, if you focus on one thing at a time, you should be able to handle all the challenges associated with owning an eCommerce store.
