These days, maintaining a blog is a no-brainer. There are so many benefits that most people don’t even stop to question whether or not they should bother anymore. It’s just a question of what the best blogging platforms are.
Some platforms everyone knows because of how popular they are. Others aren’t as well-known but can be just as useful. If you’re new to blogging, it can be hard to figure out which one to choose.
There are pros and cons to each one, and the perfect platform for you will depend on a few factors. How much coding do you want to do? What do you want your blog to achieve?
We’ll go through the best platforms and how to choose the one that’s right for you. Read on to learn more.
Of course, the first one on our list has to be the biggest and most popular platform. WordPress isn’t just trusted by bloggers just starting out — global companies like CNN, ESPN, and Sony all use WordPress.
One of the best things about WordPress is that it gives you control over every aspect of your website. There’s an endless number of themes to choose from, and if you don’t like what’s available, you can make your own.
There are also both free and paid options available, so you can be sure to choose something that fits your budget. It is self-hosted, though. If you want a custom URL, you’ll need to use a hosting service like Bluehost.
WordPress is our top choice, but if it doesn’t meet your needs, there are lots of other options.
The second blogging service we’ll cover is a bit of a throwback. Blogger was huge back in the initial explosion of blogs in the early 2000s. Even though WordPress has taken over since then, Blogger is one of the best blogging platforms.
You don’t need to have any coding experience to use Blogger, which is a huge plus for beginning bloggers. Since it was acquired by Google, you also don’t have to worry as much about security or people hacking your site.
However, your capabilities will be very limited, and it’s not as powerful or customizable as some of the other options. If you just want something simple and aren’t worried about things like design or extra features, this could work for you.
Tumblr grew in popularity as a microblogging platform. People do use it as a place to post their long-form thoughts, but you’re more likely to see photography or shorter posts on the site.
It’s also one of the best blogging platforms for reaching a younger audience. It’s the perfect way to meet them where they are. You can also build up a community easily, since that’s one of the strengths of the website.
However, if you want to reach users outside of Tumblr, you’re going to have some difficulty.
If you’re a big fan of the drag and drop way of designing a website, Wix is the platform for you. Wix makes it easy for people with zero experience to make a website that looks good.
It’s also completely free to use. If you want to start establishing your web presence without spending a lot of money, Wix might be a good choice for you.
However, the free version of Wix won’t give you a custom domain name, and you’ll also be stuck with the ads Wix chooses to run. If you do pay, you’ll still be a little limited in what you can do.
It’s easy to find very thoughtful, long-form writing on Medium. If you’re interested in building a community of deep thinkers, Medium is one of the best blogging platforms you can find.
The platform is also great if you want to put a lot of energy into creating content, and not as much effort into creating a website.
You won’t have any options for changing the layout, though, and you can’t monetize it. Keep that in mind as you’re choosing the best platform for your new blog.
Squarespace is one of the best blogging platforms for customizing your website without knowing how to code. They make everything simple so that you can get what you want without giving yourself a headache.
Squarespace also supports e-commerce, and you’ll be able to have your own domain name. Their security is good enough that you won’t have to stress about being hacked.
It is a paid option, but the prices are reasonable. Just be aware that you might not have as much support as you would with a platform like WordPress.
Similar to Wix, Weebly lets you build your website with a drag and drop feature. It’s perfect for people who want to focus more on content and less on the actual creation of their website.
Weebly sites are self-hosted, and you can try the service for free to start out with to see if you like it.
One of the cons is that you’ll be limited in how many new features you can add, so this is definitely best for bloggers who want something simpler. If customization is important to you, Weebly is probably not one of the best blogging platforms to test out.
If you’re blogging for business, you should definitely check out Drupal. Unlike some of the other platforms on our list, Drupal is also a content management system. This makes it an attractive option for businesses who are looking for a more robust system.
You’ll have to host your blog elsewhere, but there are enough benefits with the Drupal CMS that this isn’t much of a drawback. This is a great option for people comfortable with coding and looking for something that will allow them to grow.
